Bawden and Ravilious reunited
Wednesday, 07 January 2009

The major event in Scarborough Art Gallery this spring will be a unique exhibition of the work of Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. Several works by Bawden and Ravilious are on permanent display in the gallery, and this show will bring together art and design pieces from all over Britain.

The two artists lived in Essex during the 1930s and, while Ravilious died carrying out duties as a war artist, Bawden lived until 1989. Both men worked in commercial design, producing innovative modern designs for organisations like London Underground, Fortnum and Mason, and Faber. Their watercolours comprise some of the finest British art of the twentieth century.

Alongside the work of Bawden and Ravilious will be paintings by York artist Mark Hearld, showing the influence that the artists have had on his work. The show includes works from private collections not on public view. Curator Lara Goodband told High Tide: ‘This unique exhibition of their work will only be showing in Scarborough. Mark Hearld’s work will enable the public to see how Bawden and Ravilious still inspire artists today.’
