Peasholm Park greets its old China

Two-times Mercury Prize nominee Eliza Carthy is to headline at this year’s Acoustic Gathering. The event, now in its fourth year, has attracted no fewer than 22 acts to grace the fantastic Peasholm Park setting on 13 September.

Eliza Carthy released her album Dreams of Breathing Underwater this summer to rave reviews. The Observer said it was ‘her most sophisticated album yet and one destined to win her a whole new set of admirers’. The highly accomplished fiddle player and singer both performs solo and as part of Waterson:Carthy, the band formed by her parents. Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy are based at Robin Hood’s Bay, while Eliza currently lives in Edinburgh. During her 16-year career, Eliza has become one of the most dazzling and recognised folk musicians of a generation.

Among the other performers at Scarborough’s very own boutique acoustic festival are familiar local faces including Jesse Hutchinson, Carl Woodford & Darren Cooke, the prodigious talent of Luke Keegan, Alastair James & Craig Blair, and the phenomenally talented Ashley Hicklin, Amaya Huntly and Harriet Frank.

Returning to Scarborough after thrilling a packed Acoustic Lounge at Coastival earlier this year is the madcap Mancunian Louis Barabbas – definitely one to watch, says organiser Steve Dickinson.
On site facilities include catering, bar, toilets, festival stalls, face painting plus there will be performances by Scarborough’s champion cheerleaders East Coast Tigers and the fabulous Kevin O’Connor Irish Dancers.

Bands perform from the bandstand on the lake under the towering gaze of the island pagoda. There’s plenty of room onshore for families, lots of space to relax and disabled access. And it’s all free.

Steve Dickinson says: ‘I’m very excited about Acoustic Gathering IV. I have had so many artists expressing a desire to play at this year’s festival that it has been a very difficult task choosing just 22.

‘The end product will showcase the dazzling talent this town nurtures. Eliza Carthy is an incredible headliner, Acoustic Gathering IV will be an amazing day.’
